What is Bisphenol A (BPA)

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used primarily in the production of polycarbonate plastics. It can be found in many types of the water bottles you buy as well as the widely used hard polycarbonate plastic refillable bottles.
In 2004, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found BPA in 93% of 2517 urine samples from people six years and older. In some animal studies, the side effects of BPA in fetuses and newborns who were exposed.
In September of 2008, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that BPA could also cause an increase in cardiovascular disease, diabetes and an increase in liver enzymes.
How to avoid BPA exposure:
- Don’t microwave polycarbonate plastic food containers.
- Polycarbonate containers that contain BPA usually have a #7 on the bottom.
- Use glass or stainless steel containers for liquids.
- Use baby bottles that are BPA free.
